Thinking about working in a chocolate factory or a bakery may bring to mind a vision of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory or delicious pies and cakes constantly being pulled from the oven. While there are delicious smells always coming from the oven, there are no Oompa Loompas helping clean dishes or singing songs while we bake.
I have always loved to bake and now, being surrounded by other people who enjoy the sweeter things in life just as much as I do, makes the passion so much greater. We talk about nearly all the baking shows out there and dissect what they did, what went wrong and how poorly we would actually probably do on those shows (mind you, we’re still great bakers – we just aren’t great at making an eight-tier wedding cake in two hours).
I think many bakers or cooks would agree that they make delicious dinners or sweet cakes because they enjoy seeing someone enjoy their creations as much as they enjoyed making it. In our bakery, many hands go into making some of the delicious treats. For example, a birthday cake will be made by the baker, filled by either a baking assistant or a decorator and then the decorator will take over and finish the cake. We all have our expertise and add our own element to the final product.
One of the best benefits of working in a bakery is being able to snack on the scraps of cake or the desserts that aren’t up to par to put out on the bakery shelves. My sweet tooth has probably grown two-fold since working with chocolate and buttercream but at least all the lifting of batters and trays of cookies is burning some of that off – or at least that’s what I tell myself.
My co-workers and I also seem to never eat breakfast and as most bakers know, you have to get up early to start baking in order to have food prepared by opening. So, we sit and smell the gooey chocolate chip cookies or the tangy ginger snap cookies and we regret having not eaten even one bowl of cereal that morning. Many times, we end up convincing each other that the cupcake we ate as our breakfast is basically just a muffin so it’s really the same thing. The worst we’ve probably tried to convince ourselves of is a peanut butter cookie dipped in chocolate that’s then rolled in nuts. We said since there was peanut butter in there, that’s a protein and people eat peanut butter on toast for breakfast all the time…so it’s basically the same thing.
Baking is a very physical occupation. Standing all day can make your legs hurt but when you enjoy what you’re doing, or you’re so busy running around a kitchen with little desserts, or you’re laughing so hard about how ridiculous “Nailed It” is, you tend to forget about the pain and you simply enjoy the sweet company and even sweeter treats.
